Yet for all the lip service our society pays to its deadliness, drunken driving remains astoundingly commonplace. So common, in fact, that Springfield police officers Ryan Maddox and Robert Jones made 266 driving under the influence arrests in 2009. Maddox's 137 DUI arrests ranked 11th in the state and Jones, with 129 arrests, ranked 15th, according to a survey by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists. All told, Springfield police logged 396 DUI arrests last year.

With the Fourth of July holiday bearing down, police departments across the Chicago area are preparing for another wave of intoxicated drivers.

And according to a recent survey of statewide DUI arrests, several Chicago suburbs lead in enforcement — Carol Stream, Gurnee and Orland Park, to name a few.

GLENDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- Court records show a judge has extended Nicole Richie's DUI probation until March.

A judge decided Tuesday to give her more time to complete alcohol education classes.

Richie was not present in court Tuesday when the order was made. The celebrity now has until February to finish the courses.

Federal prosecutors in the corruption trial of former Illinois governor Blagojevich are asking U.S. District Judge James Zagel for a gag order to muzzle Blagojevich and his lawyers, the Chicago Tribune reported.

In a 16-page motion filed with the court Wednesday, the prosecutors wrote that the day before, after government witness Lon Monk, Blagojevich's former friend and former chief of staff, finished testimony, Blagojevich and his lawyers made on-camera statements that the prosecutors characterized as "mini-closing arguments."
